Font for Branding: Making Memories Adds Character to Design

I recently had the chance to test Making Memories for a real branding project. It was for a small, locally owned café that wanted to reflect its community roots and the spirit of achievement through its visual identity. As I opened my brand board and started sketching out ideas, I knew I needed a font that would stand out but also feel authentic. Making Memories caught my eye immediately—not just for its boldness, but for its unique distressed aesthetic.

The Spirit of Achievement and Tradition

Making Memories is a display typeface with a weathered “varsity” or athletic vibe. It feels like it belongs on a sports banner, a vintage sign, or a hand-painted mural. The texture and grain give it a tactile quality that’s hard to replicate with a digital font. It’s not just about looking old—it’s about feeling like it has a story to tell.

When I first placed Making Memories on a logo draft, I was struck by how it brought energy and character to the design. The café’s name, written in this font, felt like it belonged on a wooden sign at the entrance of a neighborhood hangout. It wasn’t too flashy, but it carried enough weight to make a statement without overpowering the rest of the brand system.

Testing the Font in Real Design Scenarios

I began testing Making Memories across different applications to see how it performed. On the logo, it worked well as a headline font, adding a sense of tradition and nostalgia. For the menu cards, I paired it with a clean sans serif font to balance the boldness. The contrast between the two made the text more readable while keeping the overall look cohesive.

On packaging, Making Memories added a rustic charm. I used it for the main tagline on coffee bags and labels, which helped reinforce the café’s personality. It looked great against a textured background, almost like it was part of the material itself. Even on social media graphics, the font held up—especially when used in larger sizes for headlines or quotes.

Readability and Visual Hierarchy

One thing I noticed early on was that Making Memories works best in short-form text. It’s not ideal for long paragraphs or body copy because of its bold, distressed style. But as a headline or accent font, it shines. I found that using it sparingly—on logos, headers, and key phrases—helped maintain readability while still making an impact.

For the website, I used Making Memories in the hero section as a call-to-action button. It stood out from the rest of the site’s typography and drew attention without being overwhelming. I also tested it on business cards and signage, where its texture gave it a handmade feel that aligned perfectly with the café’s mission.

Font Pairing and Design Flexibility

When pairing Making Memories with other fonts, I leaned into its rustic and athletic qualities. A clean sans serif font like Montserrat or Open Sans worked well as a supporting typeface. For a more elegant look, I paired it with a serif font like Playfair Display. The contrast between the two styles created a balanced yet dynamic visual hierarchy.

I also experimented with script and handwritten fonts to see if they could complement Making Memories. While some combinations felt too busy, others added warmth and personality. Ultimately, I found that the font pairs best with simpler, more modern typefaces that let its character shine through.

Design Observations and Practical Advice

One thing I learned quickly was the importance of testing a font before committing to a full brand system. Making Memories looks great in isolation, but I wanted to ensure it worked across all touchpoints. I created mockups for packaging, signage, and digital assets to see how it performed in different contexts.

I also checked the included styles, weights, and alternates to make sure there were enough options for customization. The font comes with several weights and ligatures, which added versatility to the design process. It also supports multiple languages, which was a plus for the café’s future expansion plans.

Another consideration was licensing. Since the café intended to use the font commercially, I made sure to review the license terms carefully. Making Memories is a premium font, so it’s important to understand how it can be used in print and digital formats without violating any restrictions.

Real-World Application and Client Work

In the end, Making Memories became a key part of the café’s visual identity. It added a sense of authenticity and tradition that resonated with both the team and the customers. The font helped create a strong brand voice—one that felt personal and meaningful.

For clients, I recommend testing a font like Making Memories in a variety of contexts before finalizing it. It’s easy to fall in love with a font’s style, but it’s crucial to ensure it works for the brand’s long-term goals. If you’re designing for a community-focused business, this font can be a powerful tool in telling your story.

Whether you’re working on a café, boutique, or creative studio, Making Memories offers a unique way to add character and depth to your designs. It’s not just a font—it’s a design choice that can shape the way people perceive your brand.
